If you’re a chocolate lover, this chocolaty frappe is PERFECT for you! This intense chocolate drink is bursting with decadent chocolate flavor because it’s actually triple chocolate: in the base, in the chocolate chips, and the chocolate drizzle on top!

The official Starbucks name for this drink is the Double Chocolatey Chip Crème Frappuccino Blended Beverage. But it’s also known as a double chocolate chip frappe or frozen chocolate frappe.

In this post I’ll be breaking down how to properly recreate this at home with my easy recipe!

Okay, let’s dive in.

Here’s a video tutorial in case you learn better that way!

The written tutorial is below.

Ingredients:

First thing, let’s go over the ingredients you’ll need:

  • ¾ cup milk: I like to use whole milk to ensure a creamy, rich texture. If you really have to you could use low-fat milk, but it won’t be the same. You could experiment with a mix of coconut milk and oat milk for a dairy free version, but I haven’t personally tried it. I would steer clear of soy milk and almond milk – they just aren’t my favorite dairy free milks.
  • ¼ cup heavy cream: The Starbucks version only uses milk, but I like to add cream to bump up the creaminess of this drink and enhance the rich flavor. Feel free to use more milk in place of the cream if you prefer.
  • 4 tablespoons of chocolate syrup: Starbucks uses their “mocha sauce” (AKA chocolate sauce) to give their double chocolaty chip Frappuccino its chocolate flavor. I have a tutorial for how to make your own chocolate syrup, which is made with basically the same ingredients as the Starbucks version minus the “natural flavor.” But if you don’t want to bother with making chocolate syrup or you don’t have any on hand, you can substitute 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder and 1 tablespoon of sugar.
  • ¼ cup of dark chocolate chips:I like to use dark chocolate chips in this recipe. There’s no need to use mini chocolate chips – the blender should break them down into small enough pieces.
  • 1 chocolate wafer cookie (optional): Starbucks Frappuccino Chips contain cookie crumbles, which give them almost an Oreo flavor. To include that flavor in your drink, simply add a chocolate wafer cookie. (I like the Jovial chocolate cookies – they’re fair trade and organic.) This is optional, but this is my secret ingredient to make my copycat version over-the-top good. And it gives the whole drink a more similar flavor to the Starbucks version.
  • 1/4 teaspoon xanthan gum (optional): Starbucks uses their Crème Frappuccino Syrup, which contains xanthan gum. Xanthan gum is both a thickening agent and an emulsifier, which helps to keep the drink from separating. This is mostly an aesthetic concern, and you can get your double chocolate chip Frappuccino creamy by simply using cream. But, if you’d like a more authentic texture, you can actually purchase xanthan gum in some grocery stores or online. If you add ¼ teaspoon to the blender, it does edge the texture closer to Starbucks’ version.
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract: Technically this isn’t included in the base of the Starbucks drink (unless “natural flavors” includes a vanilla flavor), but I’m a vanilla lover, so I like to include it anyway. Please use pure vanilla extract, not imitation vanilla!
  • Pinch of salt: When I tested Starbucks’ version, it tasted a little salty to me. This is probably because their Frappuccino Chips contain salt. To mimic that flavor, I just add a pinch of salt.
  • 1 ¾ cup of ice cubes: This is the perfect amount if your ice cubes are small like mine (here’s the ice cube tray that I use). But if your ice cubes are bigger, you may want to bump it up to 2 cups of ice cubes.

How Do You Make a Double Chocolatey Chip Frappuccino?

Making a double chocolate chip Frappuccino at home is actually pretty simple. You just blend all of the ingredients together until semi-smooth, pour into a glass, dollop some whipped cream on top, and drizzle it with chocolate syrup!

But let me break that down a little further for you.

Blending the Frappuccino:

Place all of the ingredients into a blender. Start on low speed to prevent overflow, and slowly increase to the highest setting.

Blend until the drink is thickened, any large pieces of ice are broken down, and the chocolate chips are small, but not tiny.

You don’t want to completely pulverize the chocolate chips. If you find that the chocolate chips are disintegrating before the ice is properly chopped, you can add them after the rest of the drink has blended for a bit.

Pour the Frappuccino into a 20-24 ounce glass.

Here’s the glass I use. This one is 21 ounces, and 1 recipe makes a little more than will fit into it.

This makes between a Grande size (16 ounce) double chocolatey chip Frappuccino and a Venti size (24 ounces).

Easy Whipped Cream:

Now what’s a Frappuccino without whipped cream?

PLEASE tell me you always get whipped cream on your Frappuccino!

You could just use canned whipped cream to keep things really simple.

But you know me, I like to make my own.

And it’s actually really easy to make whipped cream at home if you own a hand held milk frother.

Simply place ¼ cup of whipping cream, ⅛ teaspoon of vanilla, and 2 teaspoons of sugar or maple syrup in a small glass or measuring cup.

Then just whip with the milk frother until thickened to your liking.

Scoop or pipe that on top of your double chocolatey chip cream Frappuccino blended beverage (sorry, I had to).

And to mimic the mocha drizzle, simply drizzle some extra chocolate syrup on top.

Isn’t that gorgeous?!

Cost Comparison (Starbucks vs. Homemade):

If you plan on drinking a double chocolate chip Frappuccino on a regular basis, making this recipe will definitely save your wallet!

Okay, let’s break down the cost comparison:

(Video) Starbucks Double Chocolate Chip Frappuccino | 4 ingredients

A 16 ounce Grande Starbucks Double Chocolaty Chip Crème Frappuccino® Blended Beverage will set you back $4.95.

If you use organic ingredients, my homemade version will cost around $2.85 for a 21 ounce drink.

But if you use conventional milk and cream and fair trade chocolate and ethical vanilla, it will only cost you around $1.57 for a 21 ounce drink.

That’s less than a third of the price of Starbucks’ version!

Since this fills more than a 21 ounce cup, you could actually make 2 tall (12 ounce) Frappuccino’s with 1 recipe.

So not only do you get to control the ingredients if you make this at home instead of rushing out to Starbucks, you also will be saving a good amount of money.

What are Frappuccino Chips Made Of?

Frappuccino chips are from chocolate cookies coated in a chocolate confectionary coating. Their taste is reminiscent of an Oreo. They taste saltier than a regular chocolate chip. And their texture is grittier than a chocolate chip.

They’re actually really yummy, and you an order extra on the side to munch on!

Are Java Chips and Frappuccino Chips the Same?

Yes. Java chips are basically chocolate pieces that you add to coffee drinks.

Starbucks actually calls their java chips Frappuccino Chips. Which is a little confusing since they use Frappuccino Chips in their Java Chip Frappuccino.

Starbucks Frappuccino Chips aren’t considered chocolate chips since the chocolate content is lower than a chocolate chip. Hence the “chocolatey” chip instead of “chocolate” chip in the name.
